After more than 30 years of war and with no end in sight, Afghanistan is the most dangerous place in the world for women. It has the highest maternal mortality rate of the world. Every year the warlords and fundamentalists in Afghanistan's parliament bring in more laws that restrict women's rights and shackle them to mysogenist rules.
SAWA-Australia is a not-for-profit organization to provide Afghan women with education and health services for a future Afghanistan free of fundamentalist violence and foreign interference.
Established in 2004, SAWA-Australia expanded in 2010 to establish state-based organizations. SAWA-Australia (SA) is incorporated in South Australia and coordinates regional groups in Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland.
SAWA-Australia (SA) operates entirely through volunteers. It does not have paid staff and defines its projects in consultation with women's organizations in Afghanistan. All donations go to its support projects in Afghanistan.
