SAWA-Australia, the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan, is dedicated to raising funds for human rights, education, nutrition, health, safety, and improving the self-esteem of Afghanistan's women and children, including those who live as refugees in Pakistan.
SAWA is not your ordinary charity. It is operated entirely by volunteers and does not have to use part of its donation income to pay any staff. As a consequence SAWA has extremely low administrative overheads (between 1 and 2%), and all funds raised go to projects in Afghanistan and Pakistan for the advancement of the rights of Afghanistan's women.
SAWA has two state associations. SAWA (SA) is incorporated in South Australia SAWA (NSW) in New South Wales, SAWA's finances are audited by an independent external auditor. Progress of SAWA's support projects is reported in SAWA's quarterly newsletter the SAWAN.
One of SAWA's support projects is the Vocational Training Centre operated by the Organization for Promoting Afghan Women's Capabilities (OPAWC) in Kabul.
